What Is Parting (Cut-Off)?

Parting is the operation that separates a finished part from the bar stock.
It is also called "cut-off."
A thin parting tool is fed toward the center of the material to cut the part free.

A Closer Look

Parting is an essential step for a CNC automatic lathe, which produces continuously from bar stock fed by a bar feeder.
When machining of one part is complete, parting cuts it free, the bar is advanced by the amount consumed, and the next cycle begins.
The quality of the parting cut affects the end face of the part and the burr left at separation.
Stable parting is a key element in sustaining volume-production quality.
