Basics

What Is a Gang-Type Tool Post (Gang Tooling)?

Tools are arranged in a straight row. Sliding the common tool plate selects the required tool.

A gang-type tool post is a design in which several tools are fixed side by side in a single row, like the teeth of a comb.
The arrangement is known as "gang tooling."

A Closer Look

Because tools are switched simply by sliding the tool post, tool-change time is short and cycle time (machining time per part) can be trimmed to a minimum.
That makes it well suited to high-speed, high-volume production of small parts with simple shapes.
It pairs naturally with the Swiss-type, which excels at volume production of slender parts.
For complex machining that needs many tools, the turret type is the better fit.
