What Is a Turret-Type Tool Post?

A rotating turret indexes tools mounted around its perimeter into the cutting position.

A turret-type tool post is a design in which several tools are arranged radially and the tool to be used is selected by rotating (indexing) the turret.
A "turret" is a rotating gun platform.

A Closer Look

Because it can carry many tools, it suits complex parts with many operations and a wide product mix.
The turret rotates to bring the desired tool into position for machining.
Since every tool change requires the turret to rotate, changes take slightly longer than on a gang-type post, but the flexibility and tool capacity make up for it.
